When struck in melee, the caster may choose to have the shield explode toward the attacker. This inflicts 3d6+1/level (max +15) fire damage to the target and causes the spell to initiate a bull rush against the target as a Large creature with a +8 bonus, for a total bonus of +12. The caster cannot choose to shorten the bull rush's push distance. Using the shield in this manner discharges the spell.
