However, a warlock is even more limited in his invocation selection than a sorcerer is in his spells, and there are a some key differences between invocations and spells. A warlock's invocations are spell-like abilities, meaning that they generally allow spell resistance and provoke attacks of opportunities when used. Invocations can be disrupted, just as spells can be ruined during casting, and a warlock is entitled to make Concentration checks to maintain his invocation if he suffers damage during casting. A warlock can choose to cast his invocations defensively with a Concentration check to avoid provoking attacks of opportunities. Invocations have the same casting time as the spell that they mimic, or a standard action if they don't mimic a spell (and the invocation itself doesn't say otherwise). Unlike other spell-like abilities, invocations can be countered like spells (using spells like Dispel Magic or using the exact same invocation only), and require somatic components unless the invocation itself says otherwise. However, these somatic components are quite crude and far from standardized, making it more difficult for non-warlocks to recognize invocations as they are cast. If a creature attempts to recognize a warlock's somatic or (rarely) verbal components on an invocation via the Spellcraft skill, the DC required to recognize the invocation is 20 + effective spell level. The DC to figure out the ongoing effects of an invocation is 25 + effective spell level. Warlocks gain a +5 circumstance bonus to Spellcraft checks to identify the invocations of other warlocks. Also, because of these somatic components, warlocks who wear medium or heavy armor suffer arcane spell failure chance on their invocations (invocations without somatic components do not suffer this penalty). In addition to its grade (Least, Lesser, Greater, Grand, Dark), each invocation has an effective spell level. Effective spell level is used to calculate an invocation's save DC and is used for other purposes as well (such as for Globe of Invulnerability and Spellcraft checks). A least invocation has a level equivalent of a 1st or 2nd level spell. A lesser invocation is equivalent to a 3rd or 4th level spell. A greater invocation is equivalent to a 5th or 6th level spell. A grand invocation is equivalent to a 7th or 8th level spell. A dark invocation is equivalent to a 9th level spell. The effective spell level of an invocation is given in its description. Invocations are organized into groups of spheres, which categorize the invocations by theme. Each sphere has up to five invocations, one in each grade. You can select invocations freely between spheres. However, warlocks who draw their invocations primarily from the same spheres gain certain benefits. Below the descriptions of each invocation lies a "Unity" effect, which is an additional effect that a warlock receives from that invocation if he has every invocation of the same sphere of a lower level. For example, a warlock with the Domination invocation (from the Charm sphere) gains Domination's unity ability if he has every lower invocation in that sphere (namely Charm and Beguiling Influence). Unity abilities always augment the invocation's normal ability, augment the abilities of previous invocations of the same sphere, or provide an optional ability that you can use in place of the invocation's normal ability. If there's a limit to the number of an invocation that can be active at one time (such as Fell Ward), using the unity ability counts as the regular invocation towards that number. Unity abilities never replace your ability to use the invocation's normal effect, and their changes are always optional. A warlock can dismiss any invocation as a standard action, just as a wizard can dismiss a spell. If an invocation has a duration and targets the warlock himself, casting that invocation again while a previous instance is active ends the previous instance (unless otherwise noted in the invocation description). You can choose to cast an invocation at a lower caster level than usual, as long as it's higher than the minimum needed to learn that invocation (1 for Least, 5 for Lesser, 9 for Greater, 13 for Grand, 17 for Dark).
