133760 ==Important Concepts== ===Players and Narrators=== A roleplaying game is an event where a group of people come together to tell a story while acting out the parts of characters within the story. Typically, all but one of the players prepare characters, whose actions they direct during play, while the last player - the Narrator - prepares a selection of events for the players and their characters to experience, as well as the places and additional characters who will be needed to help bring those events to life. Roleplaying games lend themselves to different kinds of story to those found in other media for a variety of reasons. ===The Golden Rule=== The main purpose of Starlight is to help you have fun telling an interesting and engaging story. Most things that get in the way of that are bad (the ones that aren't are things like having to do something else). If you feel that a rule is getting in your way, then you can change it. You have nothing to fear from me crying or throwing books through your window. In most games, the Narrator also handles any disputes that come up over the rules, decides what happens if someone wants to try something the rules don't really cover, and is responsible for keeping track of any changes the group decides to make to the rules. It's possible to have more than one narrator, however, in which case it's common for one narrator to act as the 'primary' narrator and handle the rules. ===A quick note on realism=== One of the purposes of roleplaying games is to allow players to explore things that they would never be able to experience normally, and not necessarily in anything that even pretends to be our reality. One of the consequences of this is that some elements of the real world have to be eschewed - either for narrative reasons (in particular, to allow heroic or 'cinematic' elements that would be exceedingly unlikely to function in real life), or in order to make the game easier to play. ==Dice Rolls== To play Starlight, the only dice you need are d20s (twenty-sided, or icosahedral dice). Dice are rolled whenever it becomes important how well a character does something - the most common situations are: *In combat (a combat roll). *When a character tries to do something that might go horribly wrong - for example, when attempting to climb a cliff, run over broken or weak terrain, or jump over a hazard (a botch roll). *When you need to know how long it takes a character to do something, or the standard they achieve (a merit roll) Each of these main types of dice roll is slightly different, although all of them involve rolling a d20 and adding all of the relevant scores on your character sheet to the result. ==The Remaining Articles== ===Characters=== This part of the rules concerns itself with creating heroes, allies, minions, and monsters. It includes the following sections: ====Heroes and Horrors==== This article gives an overview of what you might find on a character sheet in Starlight, and explains how to create a character or a monster. ====Archetypes==== This article explains the archetypes taken by characters and creatures in Starlight. ====Backgrounds==== This article explains in full detail how to create a background for your character, and provides a selection of sample backgrounds to use. It also explains what happens to backgrounds as a character advances in power. ====Skills==== This article explains how characters learn and advance their skills. ====Feats==== This article explains the little tricks characters can learn in order to make their lives a bit easier. ====The Mundane and the Magic==== This article explains the various extraordinary abilities used by characters in Starlight ===Adventuring=== This is the part of the Starlight rules that concerns itself with actually doing things ====Actions, Rolls, and Checks==== This section gives full rules for resolving tasks, and what kinds of tasks exist in the game. ====Perception and Exploration==== This section contains a set of rules and guidelines for handling what a character can perceive, before continuing onto more general rules for exploring and observing things. ====Hazards and Obstacles==== Rules for travel, traps, environmental dangers, and so on. ====War and Conflict==== Rules for fights of various kinds, including mass combat rules. ====Society==== Rules for social events and encounters. ====Economy, Trade, and Equipment==== Rules for buying things, selling things, working how much is available, and so on.
