The Pyrofiliac’s Arsenal

30 years ago, the mad gnomish evoker Meljolyn terrorized the land with his horribly destructive fire magic. He disappeared without a trace, but this (aptly-named) book contains a handful of his particular favorites…



Level: Sor/Wiz 9

When the command word is uttered, the bodily muscles of the subject are ignited in a most dramatic manner, bursting into flames immediately, causing a 5-meter shower of sparks. The sparks deal D4 damage, but only to creatures vulnerable to fire. As for the explosion itself, it deals D3 damage per caster level, and is proceeded by D6 burning damage per round for a number of rounds equal to the caster’s caster level. A successful fortitude save halves both the initial damage taken and the amount of rounds that the target burns. Combust cannot harm creatures immune to fire, but if the creature is standing on (or floating above) a flammable surface such as grass, then the surface underneath them ignites instead.

If you hit a creature made of water with Combust, it does not set them on fire, but it deals D6 damage per level. Combust can only ignite an area of either 50 square feet, or, in the case of a particularly large creature, 70 cubic feet.

Combust can only ignite living things with muscle systems or bodies of water/creatures made of water. It can also ignite plants, causing magical fire to appear there. This fire deals 3D6 damage instead of the usual D6, and lasts for five rounds.

Victims of a Combust spell still burn underwater, but the spell cannot be cast if the caster is submerged.

Material Component: A ruby worth 1,000 gold pieces that shatters when the spell begins. The shards become ruined and worthless.

Flaming Undead


Level: Sor/Wiz 7

Components: V, S, M

Casting Time: Full round action

Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target: 1 allied undead per caster level (maximum 5)

Duration: Instantaneous

Saving Throw: Harmless

Spell Resistance: Yes

When a corporeal undead is targeted with this spell, its superficial layer (e: flesh, bones…) is ignited. This fire, unlike normal fire, does not burn and destroy the undead as expected, but it grants them immunity to fire, +4 AC, and half of all melee damage they deal is converted to fire damage. After a time, (1.5 rounds per caster level, rounding down) the fire disperses, rendering the undead “vulnerable” again.

Material Component: A twig soaked in arsenic water with a gold wire costing 550 gold wrapped around it.
