Back to [[Serpents and Sewers: Species and Templates|Species]] Back to the [[Serpents and Sewers|Main page]] ==Pterrans in Serpents and Sewers== Pterrans are sentient, reptiloid humanoids native to the burnt wastes of Athas, but they are both smaller and have significantly less bulk than the more brutish Lizarfolk. Ages ago, a distinct progenitor of the Pterrans was originally airborn and even the modern Pterrans still feature some physical traits which still resemble this past, like a pair of distinct stumps on their shoulders, the remnants of long-lost patagias. ==Pterran Racial Traits== All lizardfolk characters use these common features: * ''Abilities'': -2 to Dexterity, +2 to Wisdom, +2 to Charisma. The Pterrans’ strong confidence and keen instincts for others’ motives make them keen diplomats, and when they take the path of the psion, powerful telepaths. * ''Medium'': As Medium creatures, Pterrans have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. * Pterran base land speed is 30 feet. * ''Poor Hearing'': Pterrans have only slits for ears, and their hearing sense is diminished. Pterrans suffer a –4 penalty to all Perception checks related to listening or hearing. * ''Darkvision'': Pterrans can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and Pterrans can function just fine with no light at all. * ''Natural Weapons'': Pterrans have two primary natural claw attacks that deal 1d3 points of damage plus Strength bonus for each claw, and they bite for 1d4 points of damage plus 1/2 Strength bonus as a secondary attack. * ''Balancing Tails'': Pterrans can use their tails as a counterweight, granting them a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground and a +4 bonus to all Acrobatics checks to keep their balance. * ''Tough scales'': The scaled skin of the Pterrans grant them a natural armor of 1/- * ''Weapon Familiarity'': Pterran characters may treat thanaks as martial instead of exotic weapons. * ''Favored Class'': Pathfinder and Man-at-arms. Pterrans who follow these two classes receive an additional skill point per level. ==Further Advancement of Pterrans== {| border="1" !Level !Feature |- |4th |Heat Endurance |- |8th |Taste the Truth |- |12th |Hardened Scales |- |16th |Ability Boost |- |20th |Cold-Blooded |- |} * ''Heat Endurance (ex)'': The Pterrans are adaptated to a harsh and deadly environment which leaves no place for weakness. They gain a +4 bonus to resist the effects of hot weather and exposure and the Endurance feat as a free bonus feat. * ''Taste the Truth (ex)'': Pterrans have a very strong sense of smell an taste and use their tongues to sense pheromones and other flavors. At 8th level, they gain the scent ability with a range of 20'. But the most impressive of their abilties in this regard is the abilitiy to perceive the pheromones of people they talk to through smelling and tasting the other's pheromones. This ability grants them a +4 racial bonus to Sense Motive. * ''Hardened Scales (ex)'': When Pterrans grow older, their innately robust skins grows into a hardened carapace. The natural armor increases to 2/-. * ''Ability Bonus (ex)'': A Pterran character gains a +2 bonus to either Constitution and Wisdom when reaching 16th level. * ''Cold-Blooded (ex)'': The mental processes of a Pterran work very different to those from mammals and a very experienced Pterran can use this ability to his favor: At 20th level, the character can concentrate hard enough to gain a +4 bonus to all saves against mind-affecting spells or powers.
