When designing anything that has a progressive rate, it's nice to have a quick way to figure out how quickly that advancement is. For this, I use a large progression table, find where I want to start at, where I want to end at, and then find the progression that bests fits in it's place. This can be spell level, power level, abilities such as sneak attack or something similar, and each of these follows a pattern of some sort.
