Many of the pages in the journal are filled with odd diagrams, nonsense script, equations, or pages are just missing. Eventually, there is a small section with neat handwriting... == First Entry == I am not one to write much, let alone without cypher, but within these pages is information that others must know, if I pass from this world. After seeing the... ineptitude of politics, I have decided that they cannot be trusted to do what is necessary. They would probably burn this book if they found it. Before I go further, let us list out an Agenda for my thoughts, in this first of possibly many entries: * Understanding Myself * Understanding the Dark * The Dark Champion * “Dying Clean” I am Alvis, great Sage of the Dark. My Birth name, which no one uses, is Prometheus. I have “mastery” over the Dark that most men have not even heard of. Yet, I know I am like a child, wading into the Ocean, not knowing what else resides within. I have seen Zantaire, mighty archmage, fall to the Dark. I have been tempted by Shemhazai. And I have not yet fallen, though I am so close. I walk a line, slowly, moving ever closer towards understanding both worlds... Or falling completely into one. To understand me, one must understand my companions. In many ways, we are similar. We look to a brighter future, we see the necessity of action. In other ways, I am very little alike to them... * Kress, whose piety and strength are what men look to. Though his strength comes from the divine, his true strength is undoubtedly his spirit. He is by far, a much better man than myself. * Caellach, Mage and Knight. His knowledge and training are where he draws his power, though he may have been too close to his sword. He has tasted the Dark, through the cursed blade he once wielded, and the beasts he has fought. Between all of my companions, I fear for him the most. * Angelus, Politician and manipulator. He is a man that rules over others, though his fame is his own bane. He is powerful, a master of his own minds and the minds of others. * Oceane, Angelus’s sister. She is timid, unassuming, and despite the fact she contributes massively to our group, humble. Without her, perhaps we would be more lost than many think. * Tugarin, Well perhaps I am not so different from everyone. He hides his true self, and is a man of destruction, but I know little else. You might have noticed that the others powers come from within, it is their power that they call forth... I am different. My power, the power over the Dark... It is all external, I call it to me, and I keep it contained. Without it, I am but a man, and little else. This power corrupts me, this power calls for me to destroy, but I have not yet... The Dark itself is all of a place, a power source, and a road. When you stare into the abyss, it stares right back into you. I learnt this first hand - While I saw what lies behind one path, blinding light, true arcane magic - A darker part look deep into me. I now know powers that may kill everyone around me. And I hope to never use it. The Dark is a physical place, you can visit it, but it is different then our world. It doesn’t follow the same rules exactly. I hope I never need to visit there, but with the Dark Champion... The Dark is not a creature, nor is it evil. It simply is, like a Hurricane. One cannot blame it, just as one cannot blame a fire for destroying their home. However, the creatures within seem to be entirely evil. They prey on intelligent life, for fun, for power, to rule. Demons should be treated as irredeemable, until they prove otherwise. They can mark a mans soul, and if they do so... They may become like me. I can only hope Caellach has not had this happen yet. Of course, the dark has a champion. I do not know what this really means or entails, but I have some conjecture. One corrupted by the dark, likely wielding the Blood-Sin ("The Rood Reversed", a pact with the dark of great power), if they reach the capital, the Dark will be unleashed in ways we have never seen. It must be plugged, and I fear Conrad is the champion... and he is close. Conrad supposedly died in Garland, but so did a lot of others we have seen alive... Any I know he likely has the Blood-Sin. I cannot say I know exactly what his goals or his point is, but it is clear it is not. Finally, Ashely warned me I need to Die clean... And I do not know what he means. Perhaps the dark spirits? I do not know, I will need to research this and find myself an answer.
