The are four grades of eldritch aspects: minor, major, superior, and supreme, and each is more powerful than its predecessors. A warlock begins play with knowledge of a minor aspect, but grows to learn more powerful ones as he grows in levels. Eldritch aspects are divided into two categories: eldritch essences and blast shapes. Eldritch essences change the energies released by an eldritch blast, modifying the type of damage dealt by an eldritch blast and/or adding a secondary effect to the blast besides damage. Blast shapes change the method by which you deliver the eldritch blast energies, changing the range, targets, area, or other aspects of the eldritch blast. Each time a warlock would fire an eldritch blast, he may choose to apply up to one eldritch essence he knows and up to one blast shape he knows. The effective spell level of an eldritch blast changes based on the highest grade of eldritch aspect applied to it: it's level 1 when unmodified, level 3 if minor is the highest applied, level 5 if major is the highest applied, level 7 if superior is the highest applied, and level 9 if supreme is the highest applied. This may make the eldritch blast ineligible for certain metamagic feats depending on which aspects are applied at the time.
