Distat There are two stats in Distat, as the name implies: Body and Mind. Each stat is progressed separately through investiture of stat points. Stat points are either granted at character creation or awarded by the GM during the course of the game. When a character has invested enough stat points into a stat, they can purchase a talent. The typical starting value for a character at the peak of their power is 19 stat points. The power level may be raised or lowered by changing the number of starting points; for example, a 25 stat point game will allow characters to purchase up to two 6th level talents, while a 10 stat point game will make 4th level talents the most powerful ones available. A character's stat point investiture is counted separately for Body and Mind. Thus, a character with 19 stat points could invest 9 into Mind and 10 into Body, giving him access to 4th level talents in each stat. He could also invest all 19 in one stat at the cost of leaving himself unskilled in the other. It is usually a good idea to put at least one point into a stat, as having an effective stat of 0 can make your character exceptionally vulnerable to certain attacks. A stat value of 1 represents an average human. ====Effective Value==== A stat can be modified in ways other than stat point investiture, usually through talents. This is called an effective value, and does not affect invested stat points (so it may not be used to purchase talents) nor the prerequisite for a talent level. Instead, the effective value is used to calculate the character's practical level of ability in-game. Some talents or effects may only change the effective value under certain conditions. All alterations to an effective value are cumulative unless specified otherwise. If there are no applicable modifiers, your Effective Value is equal to the amount of stat points invested into the appropriate stat.<br> Some talents only apply to the Active or the Passive Effective Value. Add those bonuses to your Effective Value only when the appropriate value would be used. =====Active Value===== The active value of a stat is used when the character is making an attack or otherwise creating an effect. =====Passive Value===== The passive value of a stat is used when the character is defending or any other case where the character is responding to another's action. =====Bonus Pool===== Distat uses a bonus pool mechanic for creating variance in a character's actions. Points can be added to the bonus pool at the GM's option (for example, to reward good roleplaying) or through certain talents. These points can then be spent to enhance a character's Effective Active Stat for a single stat or opposed check, and a character can spend any number of bonus pool points he has. The normal size a character bonus pool is equal to the highest amount of points the character has invested into a stat (so a character with 13 stat points invested in Body has a bonus pool size of 13, even if he has only 3 invested in Mind). Characters are created with an empty bonus pool. A character may only use half their bonus pool (rounded up) maximum at a time. ====Stat Checks==== A character that wishes to perform a difficult task makes a stat check - their Effective Active Stat against a target number set by the GM. If they exceed the target number, they succeed at the task, but a tie counts as a failure. If a character is competing with an active opponent, they make an opposed check instead. Sometimes, a GM will apply circumstance penalties or bonuses to Effective Stats for certain checks depending on environmental conditions such as visibility or temperature. A well-written description of the action may also earn bonuses from the GM.
