Arcane Blade of Mystra

"The Weave is all to us. We are its protectors, its enforcers, and its servants." - Varsuch Respente, Grandmaster of the Order of the Arcane Blades.

The arcane blades of Mystra are an order of paladins dedicated to defending the Weave from both those who would abuse its powers and those who would destroy it. Because of their service to Mystra, the arcane blades are powered not by divine magic but by arcane, and they use these powers to disrupt the magic of evil spellcasters and protect others from harmful spells. Their melding of arcane magic and combat skill allows them to fearlessly fight evil mages and Shadow Weave users alike in order to keep the Weave pure.


Becoming an Arcane Blade

All prospective arcane blades of Mystra have at least a few levels in paladin. The Mystic Fire KnightCoV substitution levels are quite popular on single-classed paladin recruits, while multiclassed characters tend to have levels in classes like crusader, fighter, or knight in order to further augment their combat prowess.

Spellcasting: Arcane blades of Mystra gain the ability to spontaneously cast arcane spells each day, just as sorcerers. You need 10 + spell level Charisma to cast a particular arcane blade spell, and you gain bonus spell slots based on your Charisma. The caster level is equal to your arcane blade class level + your paladin class level, and the save DCs are equal to 10 + spell level + Charisma modifier. Your spell slots per day and number of spells known are based on your class level, as shown in the table above.

In addition, at every even class level, you may swap an arcane blade spell you know for a different arcane blade spell of the same spell level. You select your spells from the arcane blade spell list (see below).

Continued Advancement: You may add your arcane blade of Mystra level to your paladin level for the purposes of determining your Smite Evil bonus damage, your Smite Evil uses per day, and your Lay on Hands healing per day. If you don't already have either of these features, you don't gain that advancement until you gain them from another source.

Armored Mage (Ex): You can cast arcane spells while wearing light armor or a shield without risking arcane spell failure chance. At 4th level, this improves, allowing you to wear medium armor without arcane spell failure. At 9th level, you can wear heavy armor without arcane spell failure as well.

Unweave (Su): Once per day, as a free action, a 2nd level arcane blade may choose to deliver a greater dispel magic to an enemy creature with a melee attack. You must choose to use this ability before rolling attack, and it is wasted if the attack fails. If the attack hits, treat this as if you had cast a targeted greater dispel magic at the enemy, with caster level equal to your caster level in arcane blade of Mystra (max +20).

You gain an additional use of this ability at levels 5, 8, and 11. If you have Spellshatter as a class feature (such as from Mystic Fire Knight [CoV]), add any daily uses of Spellshatter to determine the total number of Unweaves you may attempt each day. You may no longer use Spellshatter. (For example, a paladin 15 with Mystic Fire Knight substitution at 6th gets Spellshatter 5/day. If he then takes two levels in arcane blade of Mystra, he ends up with Unweave 6/day, and he may no longer use Spellshatter.)

Arcane Blade (Su): As you increase in levels, you learn various techniques that allow you to confer magical power to your weapon. They are as follows:

Fire: At 3rd level, as a free action once per round, you may sacrifice a prepared spell or spell slot of 1st level or higher. If you do, you gain a sacred bonus to attack equal to that spell's level for 1 round, and your weapon attacks that round deal +1d6 fire damage per spell level sacrificed. The sacrificed spell or slot acts as if used, and is restored when you regain spells the next day. (So you can sacrifice a 3rd level spell for +3 attack and +3d6 fire damage on weapon attacks for 1 round.)

Dispel: At 7th level, as a swift action, you may give up a daily use of your Unweave class feature in order to imbue your weapon with disruptive energy for 1 round. Any enemy you strike with a weapon attack that round is affected as if hit by your Unweave ability, thus becoming a target of your greater dispel magic. A creature may be dispelled more than once this way if you strike that creature multiple times before the round ends.

Elements: At 11th level, as a swift action, you may sacrifice a prepared spell or spell slot to imbue your weapon with elemental power. For a number of rounds equal to the spell level of the sacrificed spell/slot, you deal extra fire, cold, and electricity damage with every weapon attack equal to 1d6 + spell level of the sacrificed spell/slot. This stacks with any fire damage gained from uses of Arcane Blade (fire). (So you can sacrifice a 4th level spell for +1d6 + 4 fire damage, +1d6 + 4 cold damage, and +1d6 + 4 electricity damage on every weapon attack for 4 rounds.)

Magestutter (Su): As hunters of evil mages, arcane blades of Mystra learn to disrupt the powers of evil spellcasters. Whenever an arcane blade of 6th level or higher successfully smites an evil creature (using Smite Evil), that creature automatically loses some of its spellcasting potential. If that creature has spell slots or prepared spells, that creature loses a random spell or slot of the highest spell level it has available, expending it for the day. If that creature has invocations, that creature loses access to a random available invocation of his highest grade for 1 minute. If that creature has non-invocation spell-like abilities, that creature loses a single daily use of a random spell-like ability it possess (if it has no SLAs with daily use limitations, this doesn't occur). Creatures with more than one of these three capabilities (spellcasting, invocations, SLAs) suffer loss in every category applicable.

At 10th level, you can apply this to every melee attack you make against evil creatures, even if you are not using Smite Evil on that attack.

Sword of Light and Order (Su): At 12th level, any weapon you wield is automatically considered a magic weapon, allowing it to pierce damage reduction/magic and have a chance to hit incorporeal creatures. In addition, it is also considered Axiomatic and Holy, gaining you +2d6 damage versus chaotic or evil creatures (and +4d6 vs chaotic evil creatures) and allowing you to ignore DR/good and DR/law. These bonuses stack if the weapon you're wielding already has the Axiomatic and/or Holy properties (so if it's already a Holy weapon, it now deals +4d6 damage vs evil creatures). Finally, you constantly emit a magic circle against evil effect, as the spell, which you can create or dismiss as a free action.

Arcane Blade Feats

Arcane Education

You learn to prepare other arcane spells from a spellbook.

Prerequisites: Arcane Preparation, Scribe Scroll, arcane blade of Mystra 4th level

Benefit: You can use your arcane blade spell slots to prepare wizard spells. These wizard spells must be taken from your spellbook or another character's spellbook (though in this case you must decipher the spellbook with a Spellcraft check just as a wizard using a borrowed spellbook). You may cast these prepared spells as if they were arcane blade spells. In addition, your arcane blade of Mystra caster level is now equal to your arcane blade level + your paladin level + your total number of class levels in other arcane spellcasting classes.

Mounted Blade of Mystra

Not all arcane blades are content to fight evil mages on foot.

Prerequisites: Special Mount class feature, arcane blade of Mystra 1st level

Benefit: Your arcane blade of Mystra level stacks with your paladin level to determine the abilities of your special mount.
